Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max sits at the top of the 2026 lineup, pairing the same 48MP variable-aperture camera system and A20 Pro chip as the standard iPhone 18 Pro with a larger 6.9-inch display and the biggest year-over-year battery gain Apple has ever delivered on an iPhone. If the iPhone 18 Pro is sized for one-handed use, the Pro Max is built for anyone who wants the largest screen possible and the longest stretch between charges — full stop.
Everything that changed on the standard Pro carries over here: variable aperture, the smaller Dynamic Island, the 2nm A20 Pro chip, and the redesigned vapor chamber. What the Max adds on top is scale — a bigger canvas for video, gaming, and split-screen work, and a battery built to match it.
Burgundy

The iPhone 18 Pro Max measures 163.4mm tall, 78.0mm wide, and 8.75mm thick, weighing 249 grams — noticeably larger in hand than the standard Pro’s 211g, but built from the same aluminum unibody frame with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. It ships in the same four finishes as the standard Pro: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.
Like the standard Pro, the Pro Max gets the smaller, redesigned Dynamic Island — capable of showing three Live Activities at once instead of two. On the larger 6.9-inch display, that shrunken module reads even less intrusive, leaving more visible screen real estate for whatever’s actually on screen.
The Pro Max carries the same IP68 rating as the rest of the lineup, tested to withstand submersion up to 6 meters for 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529 — built to handle daily wear without asking you to baby it.
The Pro Max steps up to a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel at 2868 by 1320 pixels, still at 460ppi — so text and images stay just as sharp as on the smaller Pro, simply across more screen. ProMotion’s adaptive refresh rate scales up to 120Hz, and peak outdoor brightness holds at 3,000 nits with the same 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, Always-On display, True Tone, wide color (P3), and anti-reflective coating as the standard Pro.
The extra half-inch of screen matters most for video, reading, and split-screen multitasking — watching a film in Dolby Vision, reading a long article without constant scrolling, or running two apps side by side without either feeling cramped. It’s the same panel quality as the Pro, just scaled up for anyone who prioritizes screen size above pocketability.
Apple didn’t hold anything back for the larger model — the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the exact same 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture (ƒ/1.48–ƒ/4.0) as the standard Pro, controlled by the same six laser-cut blades that automatically widen for low light or narrow for group shots with more in focus. The same triple-camera array carries over too: a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at ƒ/2.2 with a 120-degree field of view, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto with tetraprism design giving 4x optical reach (100mm) and a 12MP optical-quality 8x mode (200mm), for a combined 16x optical-quality zoom range and up to 40x digital zoom.
Pro controls, upgraded Photographic Styles with new texture and grain adjustments, and Apple Reference Image are all identical to the standard Pro — there’s no camera capability exclusive to the Max. The only practical difference while shooting is the larger screen, which gives you a bigger live preview and more room for the histogram and manual controls in Pro mode.
Up front, the 18MP Center Stage camera is unchanged from the standard Pro — ƒ/1.9 aperture, autofocus with Focus Pixels, and the same square-sensor design that switches automatically between portrait and landscape framing for selfies and video calls.
The Pro Max runs the identical A20 Pro chip as the standard Pro — Apple’s first 2-nanometer processor, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU that’s up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI. The larger body gives the redesigned vapor chamber more physical surface area to work with, which in practice means the Pro Max can sustain peak performance slightly longer during extended sessions — heavy gaming, long 4K exports, back-to-back camera captures — before any thermal throttling kicks in.
Both N1 (Apple’s wireless chip, handling Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread) and C2 (Apple’s second-generation cellular modem, with mmWave 5G support in the U.S. and 15 percent lower power draw than the previous C1X) carry over unchanged from the standard Pro.
This is where the Pro Max pulls decisively ahead. eSIM-only units are rated for up to 45 hours of video playback — up from 39 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which Apple describes as the largest battery-life increase it has ever delivered on an iPhone. Typical everyday use is rated at up to 30 hours, six hours more than the standard Pro’s 24-hour rating. Streamed video playback reaches up to 40 hours.
Apple credits this to the combination of the A20 Pro’s power efficiency and a larger physical battery that the bigger body allows for — plus, on eSIM-only models, the extra space freed up by dropping the physical SIM tray entirely, which adds roughly two additional hours of video playback on its own.
Charging specs match the standard Pro: up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable wired adapter, or 50 percent in 30 minutes over MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging (both up to 25W). Apple also notes that just five minutes of wired charging on the Pro Max returns around seven hours of video playback — useful for topping up quickly before heading out.

Software is identical across the Pro and Pro Max — both run iOS 27 with the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt assistant that draws on personal context across messages, emails, and photos, understands what’s currently on screen, and can answer open-ended questions conversationally. The larger Pro Max display makes split-screen multitasking, Siri mode in the Camera app, and reviewing Photo Assist edits side-by-side noticeably more comfortable — the software doesn’t change, but the extra screen space changes how it feels to use day to day.
Siri AI ships as a beta at launch in English only, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish following in October; it isn’t available in the EU on iOS at launch. iOS 27 also brings iPhone Handoff (switching between two iPhones on one number, starting with T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom in Germany) and further refinements to the Liquid Glass interface.
Like the standard Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is eSIM-only in markets where Apple sells that variant, including the U.S. — no physical SIM tray. It supports two active eSIMs at once, with room to store eight or more, and works with over 500 carriers worldwide including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. On networking, it carries 5G with mmWave in the U.S., Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, second-generation Ultra Wideband, and NFC for Apple Pay — identical to the standard Pro. Apple’s satellite features (Emergency SOS, Messages, Find My, Crash Detection, Roadside Assistance) are also unchanged.

The Pro Max makes sense for anyone who treats their phone as their primary screen for video, reading, or gaming, and who values battery life enough to carry the larger, heavier body that comes with it. If you’re regularly away from a charger for a full day or more — travel, long shifts, back-to-back meetings — the extra 6–9 hours of battery life over the standard Pro is the single biggest practical reason to choose the Max.
For anyone who wants the same camera and chip in a lighter, more pocketable body, the standard iPhone 18 Pro remains the better fit — there’s no camera or performance capability exclusive to the Max. But for buyers who want Apple’s largest screen and longest battery life with zero compromises on camera or chip, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the one to get.
Mainly size and battery: the Pro Max has a larger 6.9-inch display (vs 6.3-inch), weighs more (249g vs 211g), and gets significantly longer battery life — up to 45 hours of video playback vs 36 hours on the standard Pro. The chip, camera system, and software are identical on both models.
No — both models share the exact same 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the same Ultra Wide and Telephoto lenses, and the same computational photography features. There’s no camera capability exclusive to the Pro Max.
Significantly. Up to 45 hours of video playback and 30 hours of typical use, compared to 36 hours and 24 hours on the standard Pro. Apple describes this as the largest battery-life increase it has ever delivered on an iPhone, generation over generation.
In markets where Apple sells the eSIM-only version — including the U.S. — no. It uses eSIM exclusively, supporting two active eSIMs at once, and the space freed up by removing the SIM tray adds roughly two extra hours of video playback.
Up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable wired adapter, or 50% in 30 minutes over MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging. Just five minutes of wired charging returns around seven hours of video playback.
256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB — the same four tiers as the standard iPhone 18 Pro. Storage isn’t expandable.
Four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy — the same lineup as the standard iPhone 18 Pro.
