The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 introduces a completely new foldable form factor for the Galaxy Z lineup. Rather than continuing the tall, narrow cover screen of earlier Fold models, Samsung redesigned the Z Fold8 around a wider 10:16 cover display and a squarer 4:3 main screen, aiming the device at people who move fluidly between quick social scrolling and longer-form video, reading, and multitasking.
At 201 grams and 4.5mm thick when unfolded, Samsung positions it as the lightest book-style foldable it has released, built to feel closer to a normal smartphone in the hand while still opening into a compact tablet-like display.
Whether you’re upgrading from a previous Galaxy Z Fold or moving to a foldable smartphone for the first time, the Galaxy Z Fold8 combines Samsung’s latest processor, camera system, and Galaxy AI features into a lighter, more everyday-friendly design.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201g and measures 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.5mm when unfolded, folding down to 9.7mm thick. Samsung built the frame from Advanced Armor Aluminum, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Ceramic 3 protecting the cover screen and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back panel.
A dual layer of titanium sits in the shock-absorbing layer beneath the display, reinforcing the screen and helping it hold its shape through repeated folding. Samsung also widened the gap in the inner bezel and refined the Armor FlexHinge mechanism, so the phone opens and closes more smoothly than earlier generations.
The Z Fold8 carries an IP48 rating, protecting against dust particles larger than 1mm and immersion in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for 30 minutes. Combined with the reinforced glass and aluminum frame, it’s built to handle daily carrying, spills, and the wear of regular folding.

The Z Fold8’s defining feature is its dual-aspect-ratio design. Folded, the 5.5-inch cover screen runs a 10:16 aspect ratio at 1248 x 1972 resolution and 428ppi — shaped for scrolling through social feeds and everyday phone use one-handed. Unfold it, and the 7.6-inch main display switches to a squarer 4:3 aspect ratio at 1828 x 2448 resolution and 403ppi, a shape Samsung tuned specifically for watching movies, reading e-books and magazines, and viewing photos without the letterboxing typical of narrower foldable screens.
Both panels are Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X displays running at 120Hz with HDR10+ support and peak brightness of 3000 nits, keeping content readable in bright daylight. The main screen also includes an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare indoors and outdoors.
Rotate the unfolded display to landscape and it adapts for full-screen video; keep it in portrait and it’s shaped for long articles, e-books, and browsing. The Flex Titanium structure beneath the display also helps keep the fold line less visible during regular use — one of the reasons the Galaxy Z Fold8 display is considered among the most refined foldable AMOLED screens Samsung has shipped.
Powering the Z Fold8 is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a 3nm chipset customized for Samsung’s devices, pairing a next-generation CPU, GPU, and NPU. The processor is built to keep multitasking smooth — running two or three apps side by side on the wider main screen, switching between windows, and handling everyday tasks like streaming, editing, and browsing without slowdown.
The advanced GPU adds Vulkan integration for real-time ray tracing, improving lighting and shadow detail in supported games, while the NPU drives on-device Galaxy AI features such as Photo Assist and Now Nudge without relying entirely on cloud processing.
Memory and storage scale to match different usage levels: 256GB and 512GB configurations ship with 12GB of RAM, while the top-tier 1TB model steps up to 16GB of RAM and UFS 4.x storage for faster read and write speeds — giving power users, gamers, and multitaskers headroom to match how they actually use the Galaxy Z Fold8.
The Z Fold8 uses a dual rear camera setup: a 50MP Wide sensor at f/1.8 with optical image stabilization, and a 50MP Ultra Wide sensor at f/1.9 covering a 120-degree field of view. The Wide camera’s Adaptive Pixel sensor enables 2x optical-quality zoom, with digital zoom extending up to 10x for further reach.
Because the phone folds flat, the cover screen can double as a viewfinder — meaning the higher-resolution rear cameras can be used for selfies and video calls instead of relying solely on the front sensors, a trick that works especially well for detailed self-portraits or vlogging setups.
Low-light shooting is handled by Samsung’s ProVisual Engine, which applies real-time noise reduction and analyzes sensor-specific patterns to sharpen detail and color, whether shooting stills or 8K video at 30fps. Slow motion is available at up to 240fps in Full HD, and 120fps in both Full HD and 4K.
Front-facing, there are two 10MP f/2.2 sensors — one on the cover screen, one on the main display — each suited to selfies, video calls, and group shots, with the main screen’s camera offering a 100-degree field of view to fit more people into frame.
The Z Fold8 ships with Android 17 and One UI 9, tailored around the device’s dual-screen layout. Two-way and three-way split-screen views let you run several apps side by side on the main display, pop-up view lets an app float as a resizable window, and app pairs let you save two apps together for one-tap access to your usual combination — a document and a browser, for instance, or a chat app and your calendar.
Now Nudge reads context on-screen — like a friend suggesting a date in a group chat — and surfaces a relevant next step, such as opening your calendar in split view without switching apps manually. My FanCam works inside the Gallery app’s video editor, using AI to detect people in a group video and generate a cropped, subject-tracking clip focused on whoever you select, with a choice of aspect ratios for different platforms. Photo Assist lets you describe an edit in plain language — changing a background, removing an object, applying a style — and Galaxy AI generates the result, with a side-by-side comparison against the original on the large main display.
Samsung processes AI features on-device through its Personal Data Engine where possible, encrypting and storing data locally via Knox Vault, and gives users control over whether individual AI features process data on-device or in the cloud through the phone’s privacy settings.
Get everyone in the shot at an event or a gathering with friends, then put the spotlight on one person later with Galaxy AI. On the Galaxy Z Fold8’s main screen, turn wide-angle shots into subject-centered tracking clips, cropped to your choice of aspect ratio — all edited right from your Gallery for easier, more precise results.
Samsung backs the Galaxy Z Fold8 with up to seven years of major Android OS upgrades and security updates, one of the longest software support commitments on any Android smartphone. That means the same device you buy today is designed to keep receiving new One UI versions, security patches, and Galaxy AI features for years, rather than falling behind after two or three update cycles.
Security is handled through Samsung Knox, a multi-layered defense platform built into the hardware itself. Knox Vault isolates sensitive data — like biometric information, passwords, and payment details — in a separate secure processor and memory, keeping it protected even if the rest of the device’s software is compromised. A side-mounted fingerprint sensor, integrated into the power key, provides fast unlocking on both the cover and main screens.
For work and productivity, the Galaxy Z Fold8 supports Samsung DeX, letting you connect to an external monitor for a desktop-style interface — useful for anyone who wants their foldable phone to double as a lightweight work computer on the go.

The Z Fold8 is built for people who move between short-form and long-form content throughout the day — checking social feeds and messages on the go, then unfolding for a longer session of reading, streaming, or working. Its lighter, slimmer body is aimed at anyone who found earlier Fold models too bulky to carry daily, without giving up the core foldable experience of a phone that opens into a larger screen.
Creators who shoot and edit on the move benefit from the dual 50MP camera system and AI tools like My FanCam and Photo Assist, while the split-screen multitasking on the main display suits anyone juggling messages, documents, and browsing in parallel. For users who need the largest possible screen or the most advanced camera hardware, the Z Fold8 Ultra remains the step up — but for a lighter, more pocketable foldable built around everyday content, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is Samsung’s new standard entry point into the Fold lineup.
